Would you dare to bare your skin this summer?

Would you dare to bare your skin this summer?

A whole host of celebrities have been spotted looking bare-faced and beautiful recently, cementing the long-standing belief that overdone make-up is quickly falling out of fashion.

Celebrities including Jenna Dewan Tatum (pictured), Shakira, Lucy Hale and Jennifer Garner have all harnessed the power of the natural look and embraced the summer months looking dewy-skinned and down-right gorgeous. But how do they do it?

Yasmeen Ward, LloydsPharmacy Skin Advisor, says: ‘The new celebrity craze seems to be showcasing natural, glowing skin and there’s plenty of things that we can all do to help our skin look at its best. Try some of these tips to help boost your skin health and give you the confidence to go fresh-faced this summer too:

Drink lots of water– Every system and function in our body depends on water and skin, as our biggest organ, is no different. Skin cells, like any other cell in the body, are made up of water and without it our organs are not able to function at their best. Unfortunately, water is delivered to our other organs first and usually reaches our skin cells last, so it’s often left dehydrated, resulting in dry, tight or flaky skin. Dry skin has less resilience and is more prone to wrinkling, so ensure you take in enough water to reach your skin and keep it hydrated – 2-3 litres a day is usually about right.

Multi-task– Looking after your skin doesn’t have to stop at home, so carry a multi-tasking quick-fix with you in your handbag for dewy skin on the go! Eau Thermale Avène Spring Water Spray (£3.15 for 50ml, LloydsPharmacy.com) is a multi-tasking must-have that can be used to cool and calm even the most sensitive complexions. Not only does it tone the skin, but it can also be used to set make-up and refresh skin on a hot day, as well as soothing and softening skin on the go. Skin savvy celebs Sophie Dahl, Gwyneth Paltrow and Angelina Jolie all love the spray and admit to carrying it with them on the go.

Always remove make-up– It sounds obvious, but 1 in 5 of us still admit to sleeping with our make-up on when we’re away from home. During summer night’s we are naturally warmer and sweatier and if make-up is left on overnight, then bacteria is more likely to develop and our pores are less able to breath, resulting in an increased chance of waking up with bad skin outbreaks – whether in the form of spots or dry patches. Skin goes through a regeneration process at night, so it’s important to ensure that nothing gets in the way of that.

Stick to products that are meant for your skin– The internet is full of weird and wonderful information, but not all of it is completely accurate – so be aware that not everything you read will work. A common mistake is using toothpaste on spots – toothpaste is meant for your teeth which are one of the hardest surfaces in your body. Using a product on your skin which is actually intended for the teeth will damage your skin and cause it to completely dry out. Stick to products that are intended for your skin and you’ll see much better results in the long run.

Get a free skin analysis– If your skin has always been more no-go than dewy glow, help is now on-hand in the form of our new, completely free, LloydsPharmacy skin service. Pop in to your nearest store for a skin analysis using state-of-the-art technology, which covers everything from finding out your skin ‘age’, to testing the levels of dehydration in the skin within minutes. One of our specialists will then be on hand to talk you through what steps you can take to help you achieve your perfect skin. Visit LloydsPharmacy.com/storelocator to find your nearest pharmacy.

Wear SPF throughout the year– It’s easy to assume that just because the sun isn’t out, you don’t need to use a product with SPF in it. But UVA rays are constantly present, no matter the season or the weather and these are the ones that cause the skin to age because they are able to penetrate much deeper into the surface of the skin, damaging the cells beneath.

Nourish your skin– In order to glow, skin needs to be nourished from deep within. Every now and then, take time to give your skin a bit of TLC - massaging your face with Bio-Oil (£8.95 for 60ml, LloydsPharmacy.com) is great as it includes the unique ingredient PurCellin Oil™, which is absorbed deep into the skin, rather than acting only on the top surface. Celebrity fans include Kim Kardashian, Abbey Clancy and Helena Christensen, who are all known for their flawless skin.
