Ensure your skin is taken care of throughout the cold weather

The cold weather is starting to bite this week and with February – statistically the coldest month of the year – here, skin expert Lindsey Springer (Bsc. Hons Health Sciences & Herbal Medicine) of natural skincare brand U Little Beauty, provides her top tips to prepare your skin for the coming months:

1.           Central heating will dry you out just as the sun does, so keep hydrated by drinking plenty of water. Jazz it up by adding a slice of cucumber and a squeeze of fresh lemon to a glass of warm water - warm water is less of a shock to the digestive system than cold, and the lemon juice is super cleansing.

2.           Yo-yoing between hot indoor and cold outdoor environments aggravates existing skin conditions, such as eczema and psoriasis, which affect more than one in ten of us. Try to make sure you wear natural materials such as cotton close to your skin, to minimise irritation.

3.           Apply lip balm about 20 minutes before applying your lipstick. This allows time for it to soak in, protecting your lips from the elements throughout the day, and gives you a slicker coat of colour.

4.           Although it’s tempting to sink into a hot, bubbly bath when the temperature drops outside, it can actually dry your skin out even more. Try to stick to warm showers or shorter soaks in the bath, and choose body wash with natural ingredients to sooth and repair your skin.

5.           It’s easy to forget, after you’ve wrapped up with eight layers, that the delicate skin on your face is still exposed. Make sure it’s protected against wind chill by using a really good moisturiser each morning, and give yourself an extra moisture boost with a night cream after cleansing in the evening.

6.           It’s not just your immune system that appreciates a Vitamin C boost in the winter months – your skin does too! Products like U Little Beauty’s ‘Kakadu Intox-C-cation’ serum contains Kakadu Plum – the world’s richest source of Vitamin C. In fact, the Kakadu Plum is so power packed, it contains 3000mg of vitamin C per 100g of fruit - over 50 times the concentration found in oranges!
