Flashing the flesh in summer means we spend more money

Those who are feeling more body conscious this summer are more likely to spend big on their wardrobes this season, according to new research.

The survey found that British women actually spend almost 15% more on updating their summer closet.

Although ladies admitted to spending over £160 on average just on a new coat and boots for the winter season, the cost of two bikinis rose the summer total by £110 alone.

Women said they felt splashing out on a new bikini was a necessity when it came to summer shopping, and that they would pay more for one that had supportive elements.

The survey found that a fashion conscious woman would pay £55 on average per bikini due to wanting to look good on the beach.

One woman surveyed said: “I used to think I spent more on my winter wardrobe, but when I started to write it all down I was shocked. It’s scary how much things can add up.

“If I’m honest when I’m trying bikinis on the price tag takes a second seat to fit. If it looks good I’ll get it, no matter what the price.”

It seems that women also buy more footwear in the summer with the average woman spending £111 on four pairs of footwear including two pairs of sandals, a pair of flip flops and some wedges.

Yet, in the winter, women admitted to only buying one pair of good quality leather boots.

There was high expenditure on jeans and knitwear in the winter, but when compared to that of the summer women still seemed to buy more outfit options due to the fact they were going away.

In fact, women confessed to spending almost 13% more on everyday items such as tops, jeans and skirts in the summer.

Another commented: “I always spend more on my summer clothes than the winter ones, particularly if I know I am going away.

“It’s important to me to look good so I don’t feel embarrassed when I’m on the beach. If I’ve spent more on a supportive bikini I feel more body confident and relaxed.”

A spokeswoman for NetVoucherCodes.co.uk, who conducted the research, said: “It is surprising that we spend more on our summer wardrobe – but when you factor in holiday clothes you can understand why. During the winter very few of us have that additional expenditure.

“Looking good on the beach is important to us and we are prepared to pay a premium for something with added support and something that slims us down. The additional swimwear really brings the summer cost up.”
