Gisele Bundchen says her first Vogue cover helped change fashion

The supermodel was just 18 years old when she appeared on the cover of the US version of the magazine for the first time in 1999 and she is convinced the image help usher out the "heroin chic era" that had been seen on the catwalks for many years using the strap line "The return of the sexy model".

In a video made for Vogue, Gisele said of the achievement: "This is very special to me because it was my first American Vogue cover. I was 18 when I shot it ... It was a very special day.

"The biggest thing you can do as a model, you know, is to be on an American Vogue cover. So this was the beginning of everything."

She went on to add: "It was the time of the heroin chic, so it was a very important moment, because this was the cover and it was ‘the return of the sexy model,’ which, I never considered myself sexy, but I was very happy that they chose me to represent this moment ...

"It was kind of a beginning of a new era in fashion, and I was just so lucky that I guess I was at the right place at the right time, because I was not working very much on the heroin chic era, let’s put it that way."

Gisele added that the magazine was published on her birthday so she considered it a very special gift. She added: "By the way, it came out on my birthday in July 1999. I turned 19 when it came out. So what a big present!"
