Cheryl uses fashion as armour

Its not just about the clothes, don't you know? It is everything that goes with it, from the hair, to the make-up, to the confidence that you carry with wearing an outfit.

Cheryl Cole told Elle magazine that 'Fashion is armour'. Ladies, we need that armour don't we? And  I don't just mean a huge tote to act as a shield. Fashion gives us a front, an exterior that shows people that we take things seriously, that we know and enjoy fashion, and wearing what we feel comfortable in makes us shine like the stars that we are.

It's not all just down to the clothes though, accessories pull the outfit together. A simple dress, or trousers and shirt can look totally different with a statement bib necklace or the right pair of shoes.

So here is a quick run-through of the must have small items to fill your wardrobe with for the upcoming season.

Belts – Whether it's triple buckled or super skinny, the belt will be pulling in the waist to highlight your beautiful womanly curves. Belts will give shape to loose fitting clothes, that can sometimes look shapeless and unflattering. Bow tied like at Valentino or Marc Jacobs adds a girlish charm to the outfit.

Sunglasses – Sunglasses are a must for all, whether to protect your eyes or your dignity. Nothing like a pair of big, dark sunglasses to cover up tired looking, hungover eyes, whilst you walk from the train station. Please note that no matter what the circumstances, they must not be worn inside. It does not look cool, but promotes a self-involved you. Everyone played with sunglasses styles this season from Prada, to Dries van Noten and Fendi. There was nothing safe about their designs. Bright perspex sunglasses, give off a retro, quirky vibe and fruit shaped arms at Emanuel Ungaro show that we are ready to put the fun back into accessories.

Head scarves – An updated way to hide a bad hair day. We usually opt for the fail safe hat, but this season it's all about the scarves. Loud, printed designs completely echo the seventies inspired collections, but if your a little unsure about them just yet, stick to plain, muted shades. The easiest way to wear them is to keep hair free flowing with a Californian wave. Nicole Richie eat your heart out.

Hats – No stone was left unturned in the quest for the perfect hat this season. Stetsons, sombreros to pirates hats. Everything had a dressing up feel. Just make sure that the fancy dress feel is only given off by the hat, you don't want to accidentally turn up for work dressed as a Mexican bull fighter.
