Style Icon: Jackie Kennedy

Mums are a popular choice (Jessica Lowndes), as is Kate Middleton and even the classics in Marilyn Monroe. Well here we have another. With the fifties and sixties fashion making a comeback, we can't think of a better time to share her with you.

Welcome, Jackie Kennedy.

Married to one of the most famous men in history, President John F Kennedy, Jackie found herself in the spotlight a great deal and became a go to for women's fashion. With her classic tailoring and chic patterns, her simple, elegant styling made her a popular choice for ladies to copy.

Decades on and along with the release of new eight-part series, The Kennedys featuring Katie Holmes, her sophisticated trend is back and we have some simple tips as to how to blend this look into your summer wardrobe.

Paving the way for politicians' wives today, Jackie Kennedy was the first lady of style. With her bold prints as seen in this image (right) on Katie Holmes, this was exactly the type of trend setting fashion people began to expect from Mrs Kennedy.

If you want to add a little Kennedy to your signature look then finding a bold print or a headband like this to the left is a good place to start, It's very Jackie and is on trend for the era and today's casual 60s look.

Jackie Kennedy was always one for a smart appearance, turning to classic tailoring to help her maintain her formal standing in society.

She was well known for her two piece suits, noteably her pink two-piece worn on the day JFK was shot. Find yourself some classic cut pieces like this colbalt blue dress from Topshop and team with a cut off blazer and some stylish jewellery and you have a Jackie Kennedy inspired outfit.

A fashion icon is required to push boundaries. That doesn't always mean wearing a dress of meat (Lady Gaga...), but making a statement helps. Jackie Kennedy was all for powerful dressing and took to sleeveless dresses and trouser suits, despite them being frowned upon, to illustrate a woman's progressive place in society.

Her fashion reflected her strong personality and character - exactly the kind of message we should be taking inspiration from today.

We love to see people embracing new fashion and she was certainly one woman who knew how to keep her look fresh, particularly with the help of a pair of earrings and gloves.

If you need more inspiration in creating that Jackie Kennedy look, stick to: white jeans, dark sunglasses, pearl necklaces and vintage quality - And you cannot go wrong!

The Kennedys, out on DVD from 18th July courtesy of Universal Playback.
