Little Shilpa SS14

Little Shilpa SS14

The Little Shilpa SS14 presentation shown at Fashion Scout during London Fashion Week reflected the alternate spectrums of fantasy and reality.

The collection, entitled Grey Matter, sees Little Shilpa dismantle the sari and re-assemble it after an ingenious series of seven steps.

The process

1. Tear it down with your fingers or a scissor

2. Toss it in a maximum powder gender blender

3. Tell the English dandy to re-create his dapper

4. Text the Bombay local to lend his unique pepper

5. Take time to ensure none of the pieces are similar

6. Trip it up with headpieces for that special flavour

7. Time is up; presenting Grey Matter.

Little Shilpa plays with the decidedly orthodox norms associated with the dari and the katori or bowl choli (top/blouse worn underneath the sari) by transforming them into shirts, while the pre-draped sari-skirts are worn not with the conventional blouses or corsets but with men’s shirts, bow-ties, collars and tee shirts.

There was a wide variety of materials used within the collection, including tulle, brocade, silk and lace in a palette of muted green, blue, grey and black with a hint of old gold.

The headpieces also incorporate the same fabrics, where Shilpa envelops cut-outs from brocade saris with Perspex, in a move to hold traditions close, but with a modern outlook over it.
