This is a classic example of greedy local authorities ripping of parents by introducing new legislation, which will see some families having to fork out £75 just to drop their children at school.

Those who drive people carriers and four-wheel drive cars will be hit hardest by new council parking permits, that have been condemned by motoring organisations and parents groups. Count me in as well.

However, despite the unpopularity of the charges, which will be piloted by Richmond council in London in September, they are expected to be rolled out by local authorities across the country.

Previously, parents could collect a free permit from the school, allowing them to park on yellow lines or in nearby bays for 10 minutes. From September, they will have to get a council permit to park in bays near the school for 15 minutes.

The fee will vary according to a vehicle’s carbon dioxide emissions, with owners of small cars paying nothing, while most parents with people carriers or 4x4’s pay the full £75.

A council spokesman said the authority was following central Government’s lead and trying to reduce school run car use. Then give us alternatives please.

Check this brilliant response from an AA spokesman. “People carriers may be in the higher CO2 bands, but they are very efficient at getting kids to school, considering many are seven seaters. It might be a better idea to remove the many smaller cars that clog the streets up.”

You took the words right out of my mouth.
