It has been reported that foreign drivers have fuelled an alarming rise in the number of road tax dodgers by a report from the powers to be - Members of Parliament.

One in 20 vehicles is now untaxed, costing law abiding citizens a least £214 million last year.

Surprise, surprise, the Government nor the DVLA have no idea how big the problem is but the Public Accounts Committee is warning the government that the road tax system is becoming a’ a complete laughing stock’.

Well I am not laughing as the figures show evasion of VED rose 5% in 2006 and many foreign drivers simply do not bother to register their cars, as they should do by law after six months. Worse is the fact that if they do commit motoring crimes they cannot be traced and will rarely be pursued by the police.

So they get away without paying tax, parking tickets, speeding fines and congestion charges. Some even ‘clone’ number plates from vehicles of law-abiding drivers.

How long will it be until one of these law breaking unscrupulous drivers kills an innocent British person?

I guarantee not long.

Why cannot they simply be registered when they land in our fine county to be either given a temporary ‘visa’ effect of made to pay the VED if staying longer?
