The records of more than three million L-drivers have been lost in the United States by a firm working on behalf of the Driving Standards Agency. Oh this just gets worse.

Transport Secretary Ruth Kelly admitted the latest data blunder when giving a statement to MPs in the House of Commons on Monday, December 17.

Disclosure of that loss comes in the light of an admission that two discs in transit between the DVLA offices in Northern Ireland and Swansea containing the details of 7,500 vehicles and owners’ names and addresses had also been lost

She said the ‘security breach’ earlier this year related to the loss of personal - but not financial - data by a private contractor of the DSA. Although the disc with the details on when missing in May in Iowa, full details were only disclosed yesterday. May? It’s now December.

This beggar’s belief doesn’t it? First we had the child benefits records going astray now this. But what really gets my goat is how blasé Ms Kelly’s attitude is. ‘Oh, by the way’ syndrome.

Pearson Deriving Assessments Ltd lost the disc containing the names, addresses and contact details of candidates for the theory test section of the driving test, when it was being taken to be backed up on a computer system.

Disclosure of that loss comes in the light of an admission that two discs in transit between the DVLA offices in Northern Ireland and Swansea containing the details of 7,500 vehicles and owners’ names and addresses had also been lost. They kept that one rather quite didn’t they?

Critics may argue this will kill off plans for identity cards. What about identity fraud? I cannot belief this government is still governing this country with unbelievable incompetence.
