Yes its true. Thousands more motorway drivers will be hit with speeding fines in a new speed camera blitz.

They will be caught if they creep over variable speed limits, which are set according to the level of traffic on motorways. Variable speed limits are already in use on the M25 west of London and the M42 on the edge of Birmingham with cameras enforcing the limits.

From February 15, all speed cameras will become digital in the variable speed limit sections of the M25 from junction 10 to 16. Until now the cameras have used film, which limits the number of pictures that can be taken before the film has to be changed. However, the introduction of new digital cameras means an almost indefinite number of images can be captured.

Being a southerner, for my sins I have to endure the M25 on a far too regular basis that I would like but the variable speed limit does work as it effectively slows the traffic when congestion is building up that results in a steady albeit slower movement of traffic. This is far batter than stop/start from those imaginary red lights on the motorways.

But do we really need to waste valuable money on the odd few that may creep over slightly?

I can just see the number of cars slamming on their brakes as they approach the speed cameras quadrupling by this ridiculous squander of money ploy.
