Gandalf

Gandalf

This week the Harry Potter franchise begins to come to a close as Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 1 hits the big screen, the second movie hitting the big screen in the summer of next year.

As Harry races against time and evil to destroy the Horcruxes, he uncovers the existence of three most powerful objects in the wizarding world: the Deathly Hallows.

So to celebrate the release of the movie we take a look at some of the best movie wizards to grace the big screen.

1. Gandalf - The Lord of the Rings

The character of Gandalf is one of the most famous in the realm of fantasy novels and the task fell to Ian McKellan to bring that character to the big screen when Lord of the Rings was adapted by Peter Jackson.

Now Gandalf is very much like a wizard is supposed to be long grey beard, staff and pointed hat giving out advice at every turn.

But Lord of the Rings saw Gandalf flying on giant eagles, battling with rival wizards and who could forget the Balrog  in Morgoth?

Even falling into the abyss with this fire breathing creature was not enough to stop Gandalf on his quest as Gandalf the Grey became the even more powerful Gandalf the White.

2. Dumbledore - Harry Potter

Dumbledore has dedicated himself to educating and protecting young student at a school for witchcraft and wizardry  - helping them come to terms with and develop their special talents.

It's the strength and belief of Dumbledore that brings Hogwarts through troubling times and he stands firm on his fight against evil.

And an actor change, Richard Harris to Michael Gambon, didn't impact on the popularity of this character as he guide Harry Potter to the wizard that he is supposed to be and to defeat the evil around him. Three cheers for Dumbledore!

3. Merlin

Over the years there have been plenty of movies that have told the story of Merlin but one of the most famous is 1963's animation movie The Sword in the Stone.

Based on the novel of the same name the movie follows orphan Arthur, who is training to be a squire, finds himself being tutored by Merlin.

The Disney depiction sees Merlin take on a fatherly role for the young Arthur to help him develop into the king that he will eventually become.

4. Wizard of Oz

Ok the Wizard of Oz may not be an actual wizard in fact he is just a man pretending to be this all powerful being.

However The Wizard of Oz is one of the most famous wizard movies so he cannot be overlooked in out chart of best movie wizards.

He may not have had the powers of Gandalf and Dumbledore but he had their caring spirit and while didn't actually do anything for Scarecrow, the Tinman and the cowardly Lion they all believed that the had got what they had gone to the Emerald City for - a brain, a heart and some courage.

5. High Aldwin - Willow

Now I don't know about you but Willow was one of my favourite movies when I was growing up as Willow and Madmartigan, played by Warwick Davis and Val Kilmer, who protect a special baby from a queen that wants her dead.

High Aldwin may not have the big battles like Gandalf but live in a Nelwyn village where he is there leader and a respected warlock.

The High Aldwin is always looking for an apprentice but has never appointed a potential successor. However he does see potential in the young Willow and is on hand to lend him some advice before Willow sets on his dangerous journey to protect the child.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 1 is released 19th November.
