The Book of Eli

The Book of Eli

Movies don’t seem to be satisfied unless they are destroying the world and leaving the human race to struggle on afterwards.

And this week is no different as The Book of Eli hit’s the big screen this week and once again the earth is not in a great state.

So to celebrate the release of the movie we took a look at some of the best apocalyptic movies.

The Book of Eli - Denzel Washington is back on the big screen this week in the not-too-distant future, some 30 years after the final war, a solitary man walks across the wasteland that was once America.

Empty cities, broken highways, seared earth--all around him, the marks of catastrophic destruction. There is no civilization here, no law. The roads belong to gangs that would murder a man for his shoes, an ounce of water...or for nothing at all.

But they're no match for this traveller.

A warrior not by choice but necessity, Eli (Denzel Washington) seeks only peace but, if challenged, will cut his attackers down before they realize their fatal mistake. It's not his life he guards so fiercely but his hope for the future; a hope he has carried and protected for 30 years and is determined to realise.

Driven by this commitment and guided by his belief in something greater than himself, Eli does what he must to survive--and continue.

The Road -  The Cormac McCarthy big screen adaptation is another apocalyptic movie to the screens this year alone.

Starring Viggo Mortensen and Charlize Theron the movie has opened to critical acclaim being met well by the critics.

The Road is an epic post-apocalyptic tale of the survival of a father and his young son as they journey across a barren America that was destroyed by a mysterious cataclysm.

It imagines a future in which men are pushed to the worst and the best that they are capable of -- a future in which a father and his son are sustained by love.

9 - The only animation movie to make the list directed by Shane Acker the movie was produced by Tim Burton and Timur Bekmambetov.

When 9 (Wood) first comes to life, he finds himself in a post-apocalyptic world. All humans are gone, and it is only by chance that he discovers a small community of others like him taking refuge from fearsome machines that roam the earth intent on their extinction.

9 is a piece of art the entire look of the movie is incredible, and it doesn't need all this 3D malarkey, not that I'm saying that it's a bad thing, to capture the imagination of it's audience and draw them in.

But the movie is vivid and full of detail that this post-apocalyptic wasteland is really beautiful, 9 is a real treat for the eyes. And while it may not be the most upbeat of movies it’s an animation that’s not to be missed.

I Am Legend -  This is the third adaptation of Richard Matheson's apocalypse novel following The Last Man on Earth in 1964 and The Omega Man, starring Charlton Heston, just seven years later.
Robert Neville (Will Smith) is a military scientist and possibly the last human survivor after a cure for cancer turned into a deadly virus.

The virus killed most of the world's population when it became airborne but turned as small number of humans into a zombie like state allergic to sunlight.

Everyday he roams the city looking for food, visiting the video store and sending out radio transmissions to see if anyone else is still alive.

The deserted streets of Manhattan create an eerie backdrop with frequent bursts of action and gun fire to shatter the quiet. But it's when the creatures come out of the shadows that this movie takes a turn for the worse.

Mad Max - Hard to believe that Mad Max was released back in 1979, yes a whopping thirty years, back when Mel Gibson actually made good movies! Oh come on it's been a while.

Rebel bikers combat the police in a bleak post-nuclear future where the highways are bloody battlegrounds. When a gang of motorcyclists brutally murder a policeman's family he becomes Mad Max, avenger of the highways.

The movie was a major success and had a lasting impact on apocalyptic and post-apocalyptic fiction ever since. Two more movies were made and released throughout the eighties.

Other apocalyptic movies includes 12 Monkey, Terminator Salvation, Escape From New York and Wall-E.

The Book of Eli is released 15th December
