Season three of True Blood may have finished on the television but you can soon relive Bon Temps vamptasticly sexy drama on DVD and Blu-ray.

The third 12-episode foray into the lives of Louisiana’s most blood-thirsty inhabitants sees Sookie pursue Bill’s kidnappers into deepest Mississippi, home to a powerful vampire king and a pack of vicious werewolves.

As the season moves forward, dark secrets are tested and some come to light - including the extraordinary origins of one Sookie Stackhouse. But even with the introduction of new mythical beings vampires will always come out on top! Here are our top 10 fanged favourites from film and television.

- Barnabas Collins (Jonathan Frid) - Dark Shadows (1967 -1971)

Barnabas Collins is a 200-year-old vampire in search of fresh blood and his lost love, Josette, on the American soap opera Dark Shadows.

Although his role was meant to be brief, the popularity of the character and the quick spike in ratings resulted in him continuing with the show and virtually becoming the star of it.

- Count Von Count (Jerry Nelson) -  Sesame Street (1969)

Not as scary as some of the other vampires we’ve watched, but we thought he deserved a mention: The Count - one of the Muppet characters on Sesame Street.

His main purpose was educating children in simple mathematical concepts, most obviously counting. He LOVES to count anything and everything, regardless of size, amount, or how much annoyance he is causing the other Muppets or human cast.

- David (Kiefer Sutherland) - The Lost Boys (1987)

David is the leader of a gang of teenage vampires in the 1987 teen horror film The Lost Boys. The film follows the unfortunate relationship that develops between the gang of vampires and the new boys that come to town, ending with messy results.

- Dracula (Gary Oldman) -  Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1992)

In this 1992 American gothic horror-romance thriller (based on the novel Dracula), The title character is considered the craziest person in town, and his mission is to seduce a visitor’s fiancée and create havoc.

- Lestat de Lioncourt (Tom Cruise) - Interview With a Vampire (1994)

Lestat is a vampire who lacks all compassion for the humans he preys on. The main antangonist in this 1994 film, he even turns children into vampires.

- Santanico Pandemonium (Salma Hayek) - From Dusk Til Dawn (1996)

Santanico is the vampire princess and main attraction at the Titty Twister. She begins the vampires' feeding frenzy when she kills Richie Gecko in a spur-of-the-moment surge of bloodlust, which was triggered by his bleeding hand.

- Angel (David Boreanz) -  Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997-2003)

Angel is a vampire who is cursed with a soul, a punishment designed to make him suffer for his past crimes committed under the name Angelus. Like many characters in the Buffyverse, Angel goes through drastic changes.

He starts out as a reluctant hero who stayed in the shadows, and ended up a dark, flawed, yet altruistic champion of mankind.

- Selene (Kate Beckinsale) - Underworld (2003)

Selene is the heroic vampire warrior protagonist in Underworld. After her family is murdered, Selene takes on the task of fighting against the Lycans for vengeance.

She falls in love with Lycan-vampire hybrid Michael Corvin, and the two struggle with protecting each other from their enemies.

- Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson) -  Twilight (2008-2010)

Edward Cullen is a vampire who, over the course of the Twilight series, falls in love with, marries, and has a child with Bella Swan.

As he only feasts on animal blood, Edward and Bella are safe to engage in a relationship. And he sparkles.

- Damon Salvatore (Ian Somerhalder) -  The Vampire Diaries (2009-2011)

Damon Salvatore is one of two vampire brothers, both objects of protagonist Elena’s affection. Turned into a vampire in 1864, Damon’s relationships with Elena, his brother Stefan, and ‘old flame who turned him in a vampire’ Katherine, are tested.

Damon’s struggle to control his blood-lust and accept humanity make him a complex character worthy of screen time.

- Bill Compton (Stephen Moyer) -  True Blood (2008-2011)

Bill Compton: vampire extraordinaire in True Blood. In his human life, he lived in Bon Temps, Louisiana, and fought for the South during the Civil War.

On November 20, 1868, some years after the war, he was made a vampire by Lorena, with whom he had a long and stormy relationship. When he comes back to Bon Temps in the present day, he falls in love with Sookie Stackhouse.

- Eric Northam (Alexander Skarsgård) -  True Blood (2008-2011)

True Blood favourite Eric is a 1000 year old vampire played by Swedish actor Alexander Skarsgård. This guarded vampire is not forthcoming with his emotions, playing down his protectiveness of Sookie.

In season three he appears to get closer to Ms. Stackhouse, even kissing her, before chaining her up in a basement as bait!

We’ve missed him from our television screens, but the waiting is nearly over as Season 3 is released on DVD and Blu-Ray May 23rd. We’re not ashamed to have it on pre-order!
