A young Kurdish man's journey to be reunited with his girlfriend comes to a halt in northern France.
When his girlfriend swaps her home in Iraq for England, Bilal (Firat Ayverdi) decides to follow her there.
The 17-year-old Kurd spends months travelling across the Middle East and Europe until he reaches the last stage of his journey in Calais.
Once there, all that remains is to cross the Channel - something which poses more of a problem than Bilal ever imagined. After a failed attempt to smuggle himself across the forbidding stretch of water, the young illegal immigrant decides the only way to make it to England is to swim there.
He starts training at a local pool where he meets Simon (Vincent Lindon), a swimming instructor in the middle of a divorce.
Simon takes Bilal under his wing to impress his wife, but a strong bond soon develops between the two men.
