The Hurt Locker

Avatar and war movie The Hurt Locker are enjoying more awards recognition after being nominated for the Writers Guild of America.

James Cameron’s sci-fi epic which has dominated the box office for the last month finds itself in the Best original Screenplay category.

Kathryn Bigelow’s The Hurt Locker was also nominated alongside The Hangover, A Serious Man and 500 Days of Summer.

The Hurt Locker has enjoyed huge award success in recent weeks and is amongst the favourite to scoop a string of Oscar nominations when they are announced in a few weeks.

There is a second blockbuster nomination in the Best Adapted Screenplay category as Star Trek has been given a nod.

But J.J. Abrams re-boot finds itself in a tough category having been nominated alongside Precious, Crazy Heart, Up In The Air and Julie & Julia.

Up In The Air has featured heavily over the last few weeks when it comes to awards and finds itself in the Best Picture category at the Golden Globes.

Directed by Jason Reitman and starring George Clooney the movie should bag a string of Oscar nods and be battling it out for Best Picture in February.

The Documentary Screenplay category is also strong with Michael Moore’s Capitalism: A Love Story leading the way with nominations for The Cove and Good Hair.

The winners will be announced on 20 February (10) at simultaneous ceremonies in Los Angeles and New York.

- Up In The Air — screenplay by Jason Reitman and Sheldon Turner; based on the novel by Walter Kirn
