It looks like Bradley Cooper's adaptation of A Star Is Born starring Lady Gaga could be in line for several nods during award season next year. Since making her movie debut as La Camaleon in 2013's Machete Kills, Gaga has really established herself as a serious actress, notably winning a Golden Globe for her appearance in American Horror Story.

But how many other music stars have made names for themselves on the big screen?

1. Cher

This iconic pop diva had already become a huge superstar before she revealed that she was multi-talented. She has appeared in Oscar nominated films like Silkwood, Mask and The Player, as well as the memorably entertaining The Witches of Eastwick and Burlesque. Her greatest achievement, however, was no doubt 1987's Moonstruck for which she won the Academy Award for Best Actress. Her latest movie was Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again and she is currently working on Raymond De Felitta's Artist in Residence.

2. Madonna

The Like a Virgin icon had already dabbled in acting before she released her debut self-titled album. But soon after making it big as a singer, she became well-known for 80s classics like Desperately Seeking Susan, Shanghai Surprise and Who's That Girl. In the nineties, she appeared in Dick Tracy and even won a Golden Globe for her role in Evita. She hasn't appeared in another movie since 2002's Swept Away, directed by her ex-husband Guy Ritchie.

3. Jennifer Hudson

Being one of American Idol's biggest triumphs, J-Hud became even more of a phenomenon when she won an Oscar, Golden Globe and BAFTA for her very first acting role in 2006's Dreamgirls. Since then, she's appeared in The Secret Life of Bees, Sex and the City and Winnie Mandela, but she's looking at another big award opportunity as she's announced to star as Grizabella in Tom Hooper's upcoming adaptation of Cats.

4. David Bowie

This musical legend won a Golden Scroll at the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films for The Man Who Fell to Earth, and also starred in The Last Temptation of Christ and Into the Night. His last ever role was his reprisal of Phillip Jeffries in 2014's Twin Peaks: The Missing Pieces, eighteen years after he appeared in Fire Walk with Me. Still, perhaps his best-known role was as Jareth the Goblin King in the 1986 Jim Henson cult classic Labyrinth.

5. Rihanna

The Work singer made her film debut in 2012's Battleship, and has since made amusing appearances in This is the End, Home and Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets. Her last film was the female-ensemble crime comedy Ocean's 8 and she is about to start filming Guava Island with Donald Glover and Letitia Wright.

6. Justin Timberlake

JT's first role was a cameo in Longshot while he was still in NSYNC, and he would go on to appear in everything from romances to comedies, from dramas to animations including Edison, Alpha Dog, Bad Teacher, Shrek the Third, Friends With Benefits, Inside Llewyn Davis and Trolls. One of his most famous movie appearances was in David Fincher's triple Oscar winning The Social Network, while his last was Woody Allen's Wonder Wheel, released last year.

7. Eminem

Apart from cameos in Funny People, The Interview and Entourage, Eminem's only major film appearance was 2002's 8 Mile; a film about the rise of a young rapper - much like him - for which he won the Best Original Song Oscar for Lose Yourself. It remains an iconic piece of modern cinema and the song is one of his biggest ever singles.

8. Meat Loaf

This rock hero has had a variety of film ventures, some of the most high profile of which are The Rocky Horror Picture Show (released two years before Bat Out of Hell), Wayne's World, Spice World, The 51st State and Fight Club. He even played Jack Black's father in Tenacious D: The Pick of Destiny.

9. Debbie Harry

The Blondie star has been in a lot of movies, notably Videodrome, Hairspray and My Life Without Me. Unfortunately for her, the only acting award she's ever won is the Stinker Award for Worst Supporting Actress for the film Deuces Wild. A real shame considering she is one of the most dynamic frontwomen in music history.

You can see Lady Gaga in A Star is Born, in cinemas across the UK now.
