Fill The Void

Fill The Void

The UK Jewish Film Festiva kicks off later this week and has a fantastic programme from movies all around the world.

As well as some great movies there are also some exciting filmmakers on show as well. We take a look at some of the female directors who will be whipping up a storm over the next couple of weeks.

- Rama Burshtein: Fill The Void

Rama Burshtein is set to make her directorial debut with Fill The Void: a movie that has already been making waves on the festival circuit this year.

Burshtein has penned the screenplay and has also written the screenplay and the movie follows A young Hasidic Jewish woman is pressured into an arranged levirate marriage to an older widower.

Hadas Yaron takes on the central role of Shira in the film, and she picked up a best Actress gong at the Venice Film Festival earlier this year.

He is joined on the cast list by Yiftach Klein, Irit Sheleg, Chayim Sharir and Razia Israeli.

- Tracie Holder & Karen Thorsen: Joe Papp in Five Acts

Joe Papp in Five Acts sees Tracie Holder team up with Karen Thorsen for the second time for their new documentary.

The movie looks into the theatre scene in New York and Joe Papp: a man who created Central Park's free Shakespeare In The Park Festival.

The festival has launched the careers of Meryl Streep and Kevin Kline: and there are plenty famous faces featuring in this fascinating documentary.

This is the second feature documentary for Holder, but this is the first time that we have seen her writing skills on show. This is only the second feature film for Thorsen as well, but she has plenty of production experience.

- Annie Sulzberger: The King of Nerac

Annie Sulzberger is another of the female filmmaker who is making her directorial debut with the film The King of Nerac.

The movie sees her team up with co-director Guy Natanel for this project: Natanel has had quite a lot of experience in this genre of film.

The documentary section of the festival is set to be a real highlight this year with many great movies on show - The King of Nerac being one of them.

The film is a portrait of contemporary artist David Breuer-Weil including his work, his inspirations and his background.

- Diana Groo: Regina

Diana Groó has been behind a string of shorts and documentaries during her career, and now she is back with Regina.

Regina is her first foray into documentary filmmaking since The Way to the Future back in 2006.

This is a powerful portrayal of Regina Jonas: who became the first ordained rabbi in the world.

Regina looks at the life and struggles of this woman and the determination she had to achieve her goal.

- Hiam Abbass: Inheritance

Hiam Abbass has enjoyed a hugely successful acting career with the likes of The Lemon Tree under her belt - but now she is making the leap into the director's chair.

She has already helmed a couple of fantastic short films, but Inheritance will mark her feature film directorial debut: it is a movie that she has co-written and will star in.

A Palestinian family living in the north of Galilee gathers to celebrate the wedding of one of their daughters, as war rages between Israel and Lebanon.

Internal conflicts explode between the family - secrets are revealed and lies are unmasked.

Other directors to watch out for include Janet Tobias with No Place On Earth, Jill Soloway with Afternoon Delight and Franziska Schlotterer with Closed Season.

UK Jewish Film Festival is released 30th October - 17th November.
