Daniel Day Lewis in Lincoln

Daniel Day Lewis in Lincoln

This Sunday the biggest night on the film calendar is upon us again... of course I am talking about the Academy Awards.

It is one of the most exciting ceremonies for years as many of the categories are wide open with few run away favourites.

So we take a look at the categories and where the battles will be fought and won - starting with Best Actor.

Daniel Day-Lewis - Lincoln

Daniel Day Lewis' central performance as Abraham Lincoln is one of the performances that is a hot favourite to taste success on Sunday night.

The Brit has been winning Best Actor gongs left, right and centre with a Bafta, Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild wins already under his belt.

Lincoln sees him team up with director Steven Spielberg as the film follows his battle to end slavery and the U.S. civil war.

Lincoln was an early favourite to dominate the awards circuit but, so far, only Day-Lewis' performance has been picking up the major gongs.

Lincoln shows off Daniel Day-Lewis at his very best - he may not make movies very often but when he does he really delivers a knockout performance.

Should Day-Lewis win he will become the first actor to win three Best Actor Oscars - will Academy voters be willing to bestow this upon him for a third time?

Hugh Jackman - Les Miserables

The Best Actor category is tough with Denzel Washington, Bradley Cooper and Joaquin Phoenix all nominated but the only one who could stop Day-Lewis at the weekend is Hugh Jackman.

The Aussie has picked up his first Best Actor nod for his stunning performance as Jean Valjean in Tom Hooper's adaptation of Les Miserables.

The movie has been both a critical and commercial hit around the world and it is the best performance of Jackman's career.

He undergoes a physical transformation for the movie and delivers a mesmerising and powerful performance in the central role.

Jackman is a popular actor and has already hosted the Oscars. He has a Golden Globe under his belt and has been picking up nominations at all the major awards.

While Daniel Day-Lewis has been the favourite for quite some time in this category could the Academy spring a huge surprise?

The Oscar winners will be announced 24th February.
