Christopher Nolan is to be honoured with the Modern Master Award at the 26th annual Santa Barbara International Film Festival in California in January (11).
The Modern Master Award is the highest honour presented at the festival. It was created to celebrate film mavericks and accomplished filmmakers and actors.
Past recipients include Michael Douglas, Jodie Foster, Sir Anthony Hopkins, Diane Keaton, Sean Penn, Jeff Bridges, Peter Jackson, George Clooney, Will Smith, Cate Blanchett, Clint Eastwood, and James Cameron.
Nolan returned to the director's chair this summer, the first since the huge success of The Dark Knight in 2008, with his latest movie Inception.
The director brought together an impressive cast of Leonardo DiCaprio, Joseph Gordon Levitt, Ellen Page and Michael Caine and the movie was a hit both with the critics and at the box office.
The movie has so far taken just over $804 million at the global box office and is one of the biggest grossing movies of the year.
Nolan is set to return to the Batman franchise with a third movie and he will be producing the re-boot of Superman.
