Christopher Nolan has admitted that he was nervous about re-introducing Catwoman to the Batman franchise because she is such an iconic character.

Anne Hathaway is set to take on the role of Catwoman in the movie, taking over the role of Michelle Pfeiffer who played her back in 1992 in Batman Returns.

But Nolan has no intention of having this character in the story until he was convinced by brother and co-writer Jonathan.

Speaking to Collider the filmmaker said: "Catwoman is a very iconic figure in the Batman pantheon. I was nervous about how she would fit into our world.

"But [Jonathan] was very much convinced that there would be a great way to do it and eventually turned me around.

"Once I got my head around the idea of looking at that character through the prism of our films, saying, ‘Who could that person be in real life?’ we figured it out.

"She’s a bit of a con-woman, something of a grifter. A hard-edged kind of criminal."

The Dark Knight Rises is the first Batman movie since 2008 but it will also be the last in the series for the director and leading man Christian Bale.

The movie looks set to be one of the most successful of 2012 but rival superhero movie Avengers Assemble has set down an almighty challenge as it has broke $1 billion at the global box office to become the fourth biggest movie of all time.

The Dark Knight Rises is released 20th July.
