Gary Oldman has revealed that Christopher Nolan has not just made a third Batman movie for the sake of making it - finding the right story has always been of the up most importance.

Oldman will return to the franchise next summer as Jim Gordon in The Dark KNight Rises, which will come four years after the billion dollar smash The Dark Knight.

And the actor admits that he believes that Nolan has made a third instalment for the right reasons.

Speaking to Crave Online the actor said: "I think Chris strikes me as someone who's too smart and he's sort of too classy to just sort of make a third for the sake of making it. I don't think that's who he is," Oldman said.

"I remember way back saying to him, ''Is there going to be a third?' He said, 'If I can get the story right. I've got to outdo myself. I've got to do it better than The Dark Knight. I've just got to get it right'.

"He set the bar very high, and so he said, 'If I can find a story that interests me I will do it.' I think also it's genius that he's picked Bane as the villain, that he didn't go with The Riddler or The Penguin. I think [that] right there is a wise choice."

The Dark Knight Rises is set to be the biggest movie of next year as Christian Bale returns to the role of Bruce Wayne.

Tom Hardy takes on the role of Bane while Anne Hathaway has been cast as Catwoman.

The Dark Knight Rises is released 20th July.
