Jack Black has called his new movie Gulliver's Travels  a 'powerful gem'.

The actor is back on the big screen at the end of the year in the role of Lemuel Gulliver in the big screen adaptation of the popular novel, which also stars Emily Blunt, Jason Segel, Amanda Peet and Billy Connelly.

Speaking to MTV the actor said: "It's a powerful gem. It's the old classic tale faithfully retold!

"We've taken some liberties. We've updated it; we've modernised with a pinch of spice as well."

And while Black has heaped praise on the Rob Letterman directed project he admits that he had not read the Jonathan Swift novel when he was offered the part.

"Of course [I've read it]! Are you kidding me? And let me tell you something, if I hadn't, I would have never have sent it to you.

"No, I hadn't, actually, when I was first offered the project. But I quickly read it and was blown away by it. One of the great masterworks of fantasy and fiction."

Gulliver's Travels will be the first time that we have seen Black on the big screen since Year One back in 2009 but the actor has been super busy as he has also completed work on The Big Year and Kung Fu Panda 2.
