Public Enemies sees of competition from Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince to land the number one spot in Australia.

Johnny Depp enjoyed further box office success with the gangster movie, directed by Michael Mann, as it grossed over $3.1 million in it's opening weekend.

The movie follows the criminal career of John Dillinger who robbed from the banks he believed were responsible for the Depression, making him an American hero.

Despite being released this summer Depp's performance is already surrounded in Oscar whispers, will he finally get his hand on that prestigious award?

Harry Potter had to be content with second place as it grossed just over $3 million.

My Sister's Keeper continues to do well at the box office as it opened at number three while Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs slipped two places to four.

The Hangover continued to be the surprise of the summer as it climbed one place from number six to round off the top five.

This week's biggest faller was Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen as it dropped from three to seven. The only other new entry inside the top ten was Coraline as it opened at number ten.
