Ray Winstone has admitted that he enjoyed working on the action sequences on The Sweeney.

Winstone is back as Jack Regan in the big screen adaptation of the hit TV series this week alongside Ben Drew and Hayley Atwell.

And he reveals that he got a buzz from finding out that he could physically still do the rough and tumble of a shoot like this.

Speaking to The Press Association the actor said: "You start to get to the wrong side of 50 and think, 'Maybe I just want to do love scenes now'.

"But when you've got to the end of the day and you're aching, out of breath and you've been roughing and tumbling all over the place, you actually feel pretty proud of yourself.

"I didn't think I would be doing that any more at my age. It gives me a buzz to know that physically I can still attempt to do it, and it gives me that urge to do some training and keep myself in that frame of mind physically and mentally."

The Sweeney is a modern day re-imagining of the seventies cop show and sees Nick Love back in the director's chair.

But there is no rest for the actor as he is currently shooting Darren Aronofsky's new movie Noah alongside Russell Crowe.

The Sweeney is out now.
