Ansel Elgort has put a little distance between himself and the Spider Man rumours, saying that a role like that would be a 'big commitment.'

The search is on for Sony to find the replacement for Andrew Garfield and Elgort is just one of the names that have recently been banded around for the role.

While the Fault In Your Stars and Divergent actor didn't say that he wasn't interested in the role, he did say that it would be a big thing to sign up to.

Speaking to Screenrant, Elgort said: "I like Captain America, I thought that was a dope film, really cool but I don't know, I've never done [a superhero role]." He added: "I think it would be a big thing to do and a big commitment."

Josh Hutcherson and Freddie Highmore are a couple of other actors linked to the role, while Badass Digest reported that sixteen year old Mateus Ward - best known for his roles in Weeds and Hostages - have auditioned for the role.

Ward has worked predominately in television and shorts during his career so far, and Spider Man would certainly be the biggest role of his career to date.

Earlier this year it was revealed that Sony and marvel Studios had come to an arrangement to have Spider Man make an appearance in the third Avengers film, which will be Infinity War Part 1 in 2018. However, it has been suggested that we may see the new actor turn up in Captain America: Civil War, which is due to start filming in a couple of weeks.

It is likely that roles in the upcoming Avengers movies will eventually lead to a solo film. The Amazing Spider Man 2 was the last time that we saw this character on the big screen last year. However, it was a movie that struggled both critically and commercially - resulting in a change of direction for the character and the franchise.

While Elgort's future with Spider Man remains uncertain, he is currently enjoying box office success with Insurgent, which sees him reprise the role of Caleb Prior. The movie, which saw him reunite with Shailene Woodley, Theo James, and Kate Winslet, topped the U.S. box office over the weekend.

Elgort is currently filming November Criminals with Chloe Grace Moretz, David Strathairn, and Catherine Keener, while Sacha Gervasi is in the director's chair.
