Maleficent

Maleficent has toppled X-Men: Days of Future Past from the top of the box office, as it has taken $70 million in its opening weekend.

Maleficent sees Angelina Jolie return to the big screen, as she take on the title role in the new Disney film.

The movie focuses on Disney's most iconic villain, as we are given a new take on the classic Sleeping Beauty story.

Maleficent has once again shown that female-led blockbusters are hugely popular with cinema go-ers, as Maleficent enjoys one of the biggest opening weekends of the year.

X-Men: Days of Future Past slipped one place this week as it took a further $32,6 million. So far, the movie has grossed over $500 million in just two weeks on release.

A Million Ways To Die in the West - which sees Seth MacFarlane return to the director's chair - was the second and final new entry, as it opened at number three.

Godzilla and Blended were both down two places this week, as they rounded of the top five at four and five.

Bad Neighbours, The Amazing Spider Man 2, and Million Dollar Arm were all also down two at six, seven, and eight.

The Amazing Spider Man 2 continues to perform well at the global box office, and has so far taken in excess of $690 million worldwide.
