BBC series Luther is getting a movie

Popular BBC crime show Luther, starring Idris Elba, is finally getting a long-awaited movie, which will begin filming in September of this year (2021).

The British series, created by Neil Cross, began in 2010 and ran for five seasons. The show followed Elba as the titular detective chief inspector Luther, in charge of the Serious Crime Unit (SCU), as he puts his life on the line for his job, again and again.

The film will of course be based on the series, and fans are hoping to see that same darkness that Luther tries to avoid in the show, as well as a clever narrative that was always present.

While there is no synopsis for the film as of yet, some did criticise the series for having a black protagonist without portraying authenticities of Black culture; hopefully the movie will take these criticisms on board.

SpongeBob’s Sandy Cheeks is getting a spinoff movie

Sandy Cheeks is perhaps one of the best characters from SpongeBob SquarePants; she is a joy to watch, and this new movie will showcase the animated undersea squirrel surrounded by a live-action environment.

While SpongeBob, who infamously lives in a pineapple under the sea, is the main focus of the Nickelodeon series, his friends include a disgruntled squid, a starfish, and a whole mix of other wacky characters.

However, Sandy Cheeks is a character who exhibits intelligence and humour; making her a great choice for a solo movie, one unlike any Nickelodeon has done before. SpongeBob already has some films under his belt, as well as the upcoming series focusing on Patrick Star; but this is Sandy’s first solo adventure.

Sandy’s film will be made for a streaming service, which one is unclear but Paramount+ seems the most likely option since it belongs to Nickelodeon’s parent company, Viacom CBS. It will definitely be interesting to see Sandy’s live-action-animated hybrid film.

A Cher biopic is in development

Singer Cher has announced that a biopic based on her life is in development from Mamma Mia! producers at Universal.

The legendary pop icon was born in Southern California and become the ‘Goddess of Pop’ as she journeyed into to the spotlight. Cher is not just a talented singer, but she is also an actress; her most recent movie role being 2018’s Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again.

There are many events in the singer’s life to cover, more than enough to fill a couple of hours, if not more! Those who follow Cher may know what to expect when the film comes out, and with the success of musical biopics recently, such as A Star Is Born (2018), this personal feature will definitely be on fans’ list of films to see.

Gunpowder Milkshake, starring Karen Gillan, will arrive on Netflix in July

Karen Gillan’s new feature, Gunpowder Milkshake, will arrive on Netflix this July, as confirmed by the classy new poster.

Gillan, who plays Nebula in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), will star in this new and original movie about an all-female group of assassins. The cast also includes Angela Bassett, Michelle Yeoh, Carla Gugino, Chloe Coleman, and more.

The movie will follow three generations of female assassins through the course of only one night, as they engage in a violent conflict that could lose them all they have. Not much else is known about the storyline but a feature like this, with a brilliant cast and the promise of intense action, will definitely have people logging onto Netflix to check it out.

Gunpowder Milkshake will be on Netflix in the US from July 14th, 2021, and in cinemas internationally this summer.

Henry Cavill is in talks to star in another fantasy adventure

Batman Vs. Superman and The Witcher actor Henry Cavill is being eyed up for a fantasy role; a reboot of Highlander, a film from 1986.

Director of ever-popular action movie John Wick, Chad Stahelski, will be directing this reboot. The original film followed Connor McLeod (Christopher Lambert), a Scottish man in the 16th century. McLeod engages in a centuries-long war, that leads to him and the evil Kurgan (Clancy Brown) to be the last two standing.

Based on his work in Netflix’s Enola Holmes and The Witcher, Cavill will no doubt be a perfect choice for this titular role; however, he is involved in many projects at the moment, including a sequel to Enola Holmes and perhaps even more work with Zack Snyder; only time will tell if Cavill’s role is to be confirmed.
