Roberto Orci is set to return to pen the script for Star Trek 3 along with two other writers.

Orci and Alex Kurtzman penned Star Trek in 2009, while Damon Lindelof joined the pair to pen this summer's Star Trek Into Darkness.

For the third instalment Orci is back and will be joined by  J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay - according to The Hollywood Reporter - as work on Star Trek 3 gets underway.

There is currently no timeline for the third film, but Paramount Pictures and Skydance Productions are hoping to release it in 2016 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of 'Star Trek'.

J.J. Abrams successfully rebooted the Star Trek franchise back in 2009 and has helmed the first two instalments. However, due to his Star Wars VII commitments, he will not be back in the director's chair for this third film.

While it is not yet been announced who will be replacing Abrams in the director's chair, Joe Cornish is believed to be the favourite with producers.

The likes of Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto and Zoe Saldana are all expected to return for the third film - which could start filming as early as next year.
