The Double

The Double

Hard to believe but today is the 1st April, and there is an excellent movie month on the horizon.

The next four weeks will bring us a great blend of blockbusters, comedies, independent films, and action flicks.

We take a look at some of the movies that we are super excited about here at FemaleFirst, and the ones that you cannot miss.

- Divergent - released 4th April

Divergent is the latest young adult novel to be adapted for the big screen, and it has already topped the box office in the U.S.

The first book in the much-loved trilogy by Veronica Roth is released this week, and sees Shailene Woodley take on the central role of Tris Prior.

The movie marks the return of Neil Burger to the director's chair, while Woodley stars alongside Kate Winslet, Ashley Judd, Theo James, Ray Stevenson & Miles Teller; to name just a few of the stars that make up a fab cast list.

Divergent is a thrilling action-adventure set in a future world where people are divided into distinct factions based on their personalities. Tris Prior (Woodley) is warned she is Divergent and will never fit into any one group.

When she discovers a conspiracy to destroy all Divergents, she must find out what makes being Divergent so dangerous before it’s too late.

I am a huge fan of the books and I cannot wait to see how this world and these great characters all translate on to the big screen.

- The Double - released 4th April

Richard Ayoade returns to the director's chair this month with The Double. This is his second directorial outing and the first since he made his debut with Submarine.

This time around, Ayoade has adapted the novella by Fyodor Dostoevsky with Avi Korine, and brought together a superb cast.

Jesse Eisenberg will take on a double role, while Mia Wasikowska, Chris O’Dowd, and Sally Hawkins are also on board.

The comedy follows a man who is driven insane by the appearance of his doppleganger.

The Double is a movie that has had the critics raving on the festival circuit, and it looks set to be another gem of a movie from Ayoade; he really is turning into a very exciting filmmaker.

- The Raid 2 - released 11th April

The Raid 2 is one of the most anticipated films of 2014, as Gareth Evans brings us the latest instalment in this action franchise.

The Raid hit the big screen back in 2012, and really was one of the best action films that I had seen in quite some time.

The Raid 2 is set to raise the bar even further, as everything is on a bigger and more ferocious scale.

Iko Uwais is back in the central role of Rama, while Donny Alamsyah, Tio Pakusodewo, and Julie Estelle will also star.

I have had the chance to see The Raid 2 already, and it really is an action packed ride that ups the stakes from the first film. This really is not to be missed.

- The Amazing Spider Man 2 - released 18th April

Blockbuster season is almost upon us, and one of the first films not to miss is The Amazing Spider Man 2.

Marc Webb is back in the director's chair, while Andrew Garfield is also returning in the title role.

The film comes two years after the multi-million dollar success of the first, and The Amazing Spider Man 2 looks set to push the boundaries even further.

It’s great to be Spider-Man (Garfield). For Peter Parker, there’s no feeling quite like swinging between skyscrapers, embracing being the hero, and spending time with Gwen (Stone).

However, being Spider-Man comes at a price: only Spider-Man can protect his fellow New Yorkers from the formidable villains that threaten the city.

And those villains come in the form of Electro, The Rhino, and Green Goblin, as Jamie Foxx, Paul Giamatti and Dane DeHaan join the exciting cast list.

Excitement is building around this released, and The Amazing Spider Man 2 is set to be one of the biggest movies of the year. Will it be the most successful film of the summer?

- Locke - released 18th April

Tom Hardy has delivered some terrific performances throughout his career, and April is set to see him deliver another as he returns with Locke.

Hardy teams up with director Steven Knight for a truly terrific solo performance: to say that he is the heart and soul of this movie would be an understatement.

Ivan Locke (Hardy) has worked diligently to craft the life he has envisioned, dedicating himself to the job that he loves and the family he adores.

On the eve of the biggest challenge of his career, Ivan receives a phone call that sets in motion a series of events that will unravel his family, job, and soul.

The movie is set within the confines of a car, and yet is the most riveting ride. Hardy delivers a colossal performance as a man who is torn between his family and taking responsibility for a mistake.

Hardy carries this entire movie and will hold you attention from the opening scene to the film's final moment. Just great stuff!!

- Transcendence - released 25th April

2014 is set to be another great year for sci-fi, and Transcendence is set to be one of the first must see movies in this genre.

Transcendence marks the directorial debut of cinematographer Wally Pfister, as he brings together a cast that includes Johnny Depp, Rebecca Hall, Morgan Freeman, and Paul Bettany - it really is an impressive line-up of great talent.

Facing death, a scientist downloads his mind into a computer. This grants him power beyond his wildest dreams, and soon he becomes unstoppable.

This is the April movie that I am most excited about seeing, as a great cast are going to tackle some interesting themes.

Science fiction was the strongest genre last year, and that fine trend looks set to continue. Pfister has done some great movie work as a cinematographer, and it is exciting to see him make the leap into the director's chair.

Other movies that you should check out include Noah, Rio 2, The Other Woman, Tracks, and The Love Punch.
