Sharni Vinson in You're Next

Sharni Vinson in You're Next

Sharni Vinson is probably not a name you’re that familiar with... But don’t worry, it soon will be after her break-through performance in the new horror film You’re Next.

Sharni was born in Sydney, Australia on 22nd July 1983. She studied with the Australian Theatre for Young People for four years as well as with the Brent Street School of Performing Arts and has been dancing since she was three years old.

Sharni first appeared on screen as strong-willed, independent Cassie Turner in the Australian soap Home and Away - a character she played from 2001 until 2008.

Originally, the twenty-one year old Sharni had auditioned for the role of Martha McKenzie, a tomboy like herself, but she lost out to Jodi Gordon. Playing a character six years younger than herself was a challenge, Sharni has said, but one she rose to extremely well.

In 2006 Network Ten tried to tempt Sharni into joining the pop group ‘Girlband’, but she decided to remain in Home and Away instead. By 2008 though she had made the decision to quit the show and move to LA in the hopes of broadening her career prospects.

Sharni has appeared in several minor roles in television programmes such as CSI: New York and NCIS. For her first feature film, she was cast as the female lead in Step Up 3D, which showcased her acting and dancing abilities.

The film was released in 2010 and in 2011 she played one of the leads in the surfing film Blue Crush 2. Sharni is also featured in Matchbox Twenty’s music video Put Your Hands Up.

This year we see Sharni take the lead role in Adam Wingard’s new home invasion horror film You’re Next. Sharni is not just the damsel in distress, though - and if you want to know more, you’ll just have to see for yourselves...

So what’s next for Sharni? Later on this year she will star in the remake of the 1978 horror Patrick. The titular character is comatose in a private hospital, after murdering his mother and her lover three years earlier.

He has psychokinetic powers, which he uses to communicate with his nurse, played by Sharni, but also to increasingly control the men in her life. The hospital doctor will be played by Game of Thrones actor Charles Dance.

It has also just been announced that Sharni has signed onto producer Adi Shankar’s all-female Expendables project, alongside Gina Carano and Katee Sackhoff.
