Superhero movies are some of the most popular on the big screen at the moment and there are some exciting ones set for release this year with Avengers: Age of Ultron, Ant Man, and Fantastic Four on the horizon.

Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice

However, we are already looking ahead to 2016 because there are a whole host of films that are set to battle it out to be the #1 comic book/superhero film. Which are you looking forward to the most?

We take a look at some of the superhero movies that we are already excited about and cannot wait to see in 2016.

- Deadpool - 12th February

The film in this genre that will be hitting the big screen is Deadpool - and it is a movie that has been in the pipeline for many years.

It was back in 2009 when Ryan Reynolds took on the role of Wade Wilson for the first time in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, and now he is set to lead the first solo movie for this character.

Reynolds will be back in the title role, while Tim Miller is set to make his feature film directorial debut with the project. T.J. Miller, Gina Carano, and Morena Baccarin are some of the other names on board.

Nothing is known about the plot as yet, but Reynolds has teased that they are going to make a movie that the fanboys can really embrace - I have to say, I am really looking forward to seeing what they deliver as this is a film that I feel I have been talking about for so long.

Filming got underway at the beginning of the week in Vancouver and there is just under a year before the film hits the big screen.

- Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice - 25th March

The newly revamped Superman was released in the summer of 2013, and nearly three years on the sequel to Man of Steel is set to release... and it is promising to be one of the biggest DC Comic movies ever.

I have never been a big Superman fan, but I can't wait to see Superman and Batman come face to face for the first time - the form of Henry Cavill and Ben Affleck. This is the second time that Cavill has taken on the role of Superman, while this is Affleck's first outing as Bruce Wayne.

There may have been some controversy surrounding Affleck's casting in the role, but I think he is going to do a great job taking over from Christian Bale and taking this character in a different direction.

And Affleck is not the only new face on the cast list as Gal Gadot, Jesse Eisenberg, Jason Momoa, and Jeremy Irons are on board as Wonder Woman, Lex Luther, Aquaman, and Alfred. Amy Adams, Diane Lane, and Laurence Fishburne make up the cast list.

Zack Snyder is back in the director's chair and Dawn of Justice is set to be the movie that leads into the first Justice League movie. Man of Steel performed well at the box office in 2013 - taking over $668 million - but I think Dawn of Justice is going to be a monster hit.

- Captain America: Civil War - 29th April

If there is one superhero film that I cannot wait to see next year it's Captain America: Civil War as I am a HUGE Marvel fan. Civil War will come two years after the success of The Winter Solider and will see Anthony and Jo Russo back in the director's chair.

We are going to have a greater idea about Civil War once we have seen Avengers: Age of Ultron, as this film is influenced by the events of the second Avengers film. The movie is based on the iconic Civil war storyline from the comics and will see Chris Evans back in the title role.

And there are plenty of familiar faces on the cast list as Scarlett Johansson, Robert Downey Jr, Jeremy Renner, Sebastian Stan, and Anthony Mackie are all back as Black Widow, Iron Man, Hawkeye, Winter Soldier, and Falcon. Daniel Bruhl is also on board, while we will be introduced to Chadwick Boseman as Black Panther.

Filming is set to get underway shortly, and this really does look set to be the biggest and most explosive Captain America movie yet. Winter Solider was such a huge hit last year and I can't wait to see what the Russo brothers do with this character next.

Captain America in the modern world has always been one of the most exciting and interesting Marvel storylines and it is great to see this franchise a major focus for Marvel. It will be exciting to see it all fits together as Avengers: Infinity War - Part 1 will be released only two years after Civil War.

- X-Men: Apocalypse - 19th May

X-Men movies continue to be a major hit at the box office and it was great to see Bryan Singer back in the director's chair last year for X-Men: Days of Future Past. The movie was both a critical and commercial smash and now we are looking ahead to X-Men: Apocalypse.

Set to be one of the big May releases of 2016, X-Men: Apocalypse will be directed by Singer, while James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, and Nicholas Hoult are all back as Charles Xavier, Magneto, Mystique, and Beast.

Sophie Turner, Tye Sheridan, Alexandra Shipp, and Oscar Isaac are some of the new faces on board as they have been cast as young Jean Grey, young Cyclops, young Storm, and Apocalypse. We are also expecting to get our first glimpse of Channing Tatum as Gambit.

This is another film where shooting is shortly set to get underway, and the plot is very much being kept underwarps at the moment.

I am thrilled see Singer back once again as he has really delivered the best of the X-Men movies over the years. Where the franchise will go after this is unclear, as Jennifer Lawrence had said this week that this would be her final film. Already it is looking like it is going to be another global smash.

- Suicide Squad - 5th August

Suicide Squad is another DC Comic book movie adaptation that is coming our way next year, and this is a movie that gathering some major momentum and creating excitement.

Suicide Squad will see David Ayer back in the director's chair for what will be the biggest film of his career. He has been behind films such as Fury and End of Watch during his career, but this will be the first time that he has tackled a comic book film - can't wait to see the result.

Suicide Squad is unlike other comic book movies as it brings together a bunch of supervillains who are called upon by a secret government agency for series of missions.

Will Smith, Jai Courtney, Joel Kinnaman, Jared Leto, Margot Robbie, Viola Davis, and Cara Delevingne are on board as Deadshot, Boomerang, Rick Flagg, The Joker, Harley Quinn, Amanda Waller, and Enchantress. It is also rumoured that we will see Jesse Eisenberg's Lex Luthor in the film as well.

We have seen some terrific ensemble casts in superhero movies of the years; Suicide Squad really had brought together a very exciting line-up. I know virtually nothing about Suicide Squad so I am looking forward to meeting these characters for the first time next year.

- Doctor Strange - 28th October

Benedict Cumberbatch is set to become the latest high profile actor to join the Marvel family as he will be introduced as Stephen Strange aka Doctor Strange next year.

Doctor Strange is just one of the new Marvel franchises that are on the horizon over the next couple of years, and I can't wait to see Cumberbatch embody this character.

The film will see Scott Derrickson in the director's chair in his first film since Deliver Us from Evil. Derrickson is best known for his work in the horror genre with the likes of Sinister and The Exorcism of Emily Rose under his belt. It is fair to say that this will be the biggest film of his directing career to date.

Cumberbatch is the only official cast member attached at the moment but fellow Brit Chiwetel Ejiofor has been linked to the film. Doctor Strange is the Marvel film of 2016 that we know least about and it is going to be exciting to see how this project develops over the next twelve months. Sadly, it won't be until October 2016 that it will hit the big screen.

- Gambit - 7th October (U.S.)

Gambit was always one of my favourite X-Men characters and it never made sense to me why he was never involved in the X-Men films from the start. We did get a brief look at Remy LeBeau in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, but now he is getting a solo film.

Channing Tatum has landed the role of Gambit and I really cannot wait to see him in action in this rather flamboyant role.

However, Gambit is project that very little is known about as no director has officially been announced.
