Merida

Merida

Merida was one of the best female characters to hit the big screen last years as she charmed audiences in Brave.

Brave marked the first time that Pixar had used a female lead character and it worked a treat as the movie was a massive box office smash and went on to win an Oscar.

Merida was a teenage flame-haired princess with a tomboy streak and a strong mind and will of her own.

The archery loving, laid back Merida won over audiences all over the world and she really was a breath of fresh air when compared with the rest of the Disney princesses over the years.

So you can imagine the disappointment here at FemaleFirst when the lovely Merida was given a makeover ahead of her induction to the Disney Princess collection.

She is no longer depicted as a teenage girl and rather a young woman with hips and a waist - not to mention the bow and arrow has gone.

Brenda Champman, the director of the movie has voiced her dismay at the redesign writing to her local paper Marin Independent Journal she said: "I think it's atrocious what they have done to Merida.

"When little girls say they like it because it's more sparkly, that's all fine and good but, subconsciously, they are soaking in the sexy 'come hither' look and the skinny aspect of the new version. It's horrible!"

What was so great about this character is that she was so unlike any other Disney princess and she really was a breath of fresh air.

This character delivered a very positive message; that it was ok to be who you are even if it doesn't conform to what others think you should be like.

Why do we feel the need to sexualise everything? This really doesn't send out the right message and I am surprised that Disney has gone down this path.

But it seems that the public out cry has forced Disney to rethink as the redesigned Merida has been pulled from the Disney princess website.

For the now the archery loving Merida ia back... and long may she stay!!!!
