Bjork has succeeded in raising awareness of environmental issues in her native Iceland, with more than 25,000 people have signing a petition since her three-day karaoke marathon kicked off.

The singer was angry to discover plans for a Canadian takeover of Iceland's energy company HS Orka, insisting the country's natural resources should remain under Icelandic control, and she backed a petition for a referendum on the issue.

She vowed to gain more signatures by staging a three-day karaoke contest, which kicked off on Thursday - and the amount of names backing the cause has increased from 21,000 on Thursday to 46,800 on Monday.

Campaign leader Oddny Eir Aevarsdottir says, "It's nice to wake up and see that more than 46,000 have signed the petition."
