It looks as though Catholics could be looking for a new hobby after rock superstars U2 prove to attract a bigger crowd than the Pope!

The rockers have broken the attendance record at New Jersey's Giants Stadium set by late pontif John Paul II back in 1995 after two shows at the home of American football teams the New York Giants and New York Jets last Wednesday and Thursday attracted 84,000, beating the Catholic crowd who crammed in for a view of the pope 14 years ago.

The record will be hard to beat before the stadium is demolished in 2010, and after discovering their accolade, frontman Bono said, "I know they're knocking this place down. We probably won't be here again before the wrecking ball but it was a magic place for us as well as the Giants."

I wonder if Dan Brown will be able to write a book about this bit of news?
