It was the beginning of 2012 when Mike Marlin released the fantastic album Man On The Ground and now he is back with a new collection of tracks in the form of Grand Reveal.
I was a huge fan of Man on the Ground and so I was excited to see what Marlin did with his next album and he really has not disappointed.
Skull Beneath The Skin, the first single to be taken from the record, kicks off the album and it really couldn’t start any better.
It is quite a quiet and atmospheric start before the guitars and Marlin’s deep and rich vocals at it turns into a perfect rock track. There is almost a grow to Marlin’s vocals on this track that work really well with the imagery that he is conjuring with the lyrics.
Second track Grand Reveal is just as good as the opener and the track starts with a real swagger - it couldn’t be more different than Skull Beneath The Skin.
War To Begin kicks off with an almost chugging effect and it gathers pace as the track progresses - it really has a very hypnotic feel to it.
There is a change of pace with love song Amazing in a moving song that is about love, loss and regret. Marlin puts real pain into every word that he sings and it really is one of the most beautiful and moving tracks on the album.
The first four songs really are of the highest quality and they kick the record off in the finest style.
Mike Marlin is a singer/songwriter who should receive far more attention and acclaim than he actually does because he produces albums of real quality.
It is all about the song writing and the stories that he tells through those lyrics - he is not interested in doing anything fancy with the backing track of putting silly and unnecessary effects on his vocal.
There is not a single weak track on this record as Marlin shows once again that he is a prolific songwriter, singer and musician.
Grand Reveal is an album that is all about the music and you won’t hear too many better albums from male artists this year.
