This morning saw Egypt launch airstrikes against Islamic State targets in Libya, seeking "retribution" for the beheading of 21 Coptic Christians in the country.

At least seven strikes were carried out in the east of the country in Derna, which has become a hotbod of extremism since the overthrow of Libyan Muammar Gaddafi in 2011.

It marks the first time Egypt have announced military action against ISIS in its western neighbour, originally denying it targeted militants there. It's also the first time militants connected with the IS terror group have been hit outside of Syria and Iraq with airstrikes.

These attacks from Egypt come in response to a barbaric video released last night, which shows a group of 21 Coptic Christians wearing jumpsuits, marched out to the shores of the Mediterranean Sea by militants wearing masks and wielding knives.

The 21 men were kidnapped last month and previously worked as migrant workers, and are seen in the video being forced onto their knees, before being beheaded simultaneously by the criminals standing behind them.

A statement read this morning following its release by the Egyptian military: "Your armed forces on Monday carried out focused air strikes in Libya against Daesh camps, places of gathering and training, and weapons depots".

Daesh is a derogatory acronym used for the Islamic State terror organisation, commonly referred to in the West as ISIS or ISIL.

Footage of warplanes was shown on Egyptian state television following the statement, saying they were taking off to conduct the strikes.

The military continued: "Avenging Egyptian blood and retaliating against criminals and killers is a duty we must carry out".

Those airstrikes came just hours following President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi's threat of a "suitable response" to the Christian killings.

Condemnation of the act was led by the White House, who described the murderers as "despicable" and added that the brutality shown in this new video "further galvanises the international community to unite against ISIL".

Meanwhile, Libya's air force has announced it has launched its own strikes in the eastern city of Darna, taken over last year by an IS affiliate.

The country's Air Force Commander Saqr al-Jeroushi confirmed that Libya has co-ordinated with Egypt, and further airstrikes are expected.
