The North East has been named as the thriftiest region in the UK, following the 2010-2011 annual report from the Office of National Statistics.

The report, which tracks household expediture, found that the North East of England has the lowest average household expenditure compared with the rest of the UK.

Households in the region spend an average of £384 per week, compared with the average houshold expendeture of £470.

Unsuprisingly, London topped the chart of big spenders, forking out a whopping £575 per week - 22 per cent higher than the national average and 33 per cent higher than the north east.

The capital's high spending is mainly due to the increasing prices of housing, fuel and energy within the area, with the average London family spending just over £90 per week compared to the average spend of £60 per week.

The highest increase in spending was on transport, particularly running costs, as fuel has risen another nine per cent - totalling a 23 per cent rise in fuel price over the last two years.

While in general, spending went up, some types of expendeture decrease. The biggest drop of average family spending was in the 'household goods and services' category, which highlighted a particular drop in spending on furniture.

Spending on clothing also dropped, with men's clothes seeing a 60p decrease and women's experienceing a 70p decrease. However, spending on women's clothes is still 50 per cent higher than men's.

The nation also reigned in the spending on footwear, splashing out, on average, 10p less per week on men's shoes.
