Waiting for babies to speak can be frustrating

Waiting for your child to speak can sometimes be a frustrating task, not only for you, but for them too.

You watch as the splutter out sounds, noises and a lot of saliva and yet the words seem to cling on to the tip of the tongue.

Yellow has been found to be the hardest word for babies to pronounce, with 70 per cent of parents citing it as the word that their child just can't get right; many of them are pronouncing it, 'lellow'.

The survey, conducted by Calpol, also found that birthday and rabbit are reall tongue twisters for young mouths to master, they often say, 'burstday' and 'wabbit.

Claire Ryder, Capol's brand manager, says: "The amusing things children say never fail to surprise us. We talk to parents all the time and it's really fascinating to hear how children communicate so effectively despite their limited vocabulary."

Over 800 parents responded to the survey run by Calpol on facebook, which also found taht 'pisphetti' - spaghetti - was the second most popular word that little ones struggle with.

The research was conducted to celebrate teh 'Be a Calpol Star' competition, which was launched on facebook to find children to star in the next TV advert.

"Our 'Be a Capol Star' campaign is all about capturing these little star moments. From the profiles and videos that have already been uploaded, it's clear that our infants are Britain's real top talent," says Claire.
