Taking your baby out for a walk is one of the best things you can do while on your parental leave- here’s why.

It gets you out of the house

Your home can feel like a prison sometimes when it’s just you and your baby, so changing up the scenery can lift your mood if you feel like there is nothing beyond the four walls of your house.

Fresh air

It’s important for you and your baby to get some fresh air- with the scent of nappies and sick hanging heavy in the air at home- you both need a break from the stale odours that come with having a new born.

It gets your baby used to the outdoors

It’s important that your baby gets used to going outside. It’s so easy to avoid going out if you are tired but it helps them to develop their sense of sight and smell when they leave the home as they are being exposed to new sights and sounds that you wouldn’t find indoors.

Exercise

It’s a bit of exercise for you. It’s not too strenuous either so if you are still healing after birth- it doesn’t put too much pressure on the areas that are most sore.

You can meet new people

Even if you just say ‘hello’ to someone you pass in the street or have a little exchange with the person at the corner shop- it all stops you from feeling so alone.

You can make it as long or as short as you like

Depending on your mood- you could pop to the corner shop for some bread or do your 10,000 steps for the day- just make sure you pack for your little one accordingly!

You can run errands at the same time

If you need to post a letter, pick something up to eat or drink or take your dry cleaning to the shop- you can do two things at once. It’s especially beneficial if you are recovering from a c-section as you are advised not to drive for 6 weeks after your operation.
