Psychologists from the University of Kansas have said that you can find out everything you need to know about someone from their shoes.
They found that the colour, size, value and condition can all tell something about the owner of the shoes.
The research was conducted by asking 68 students to look at 208 different photographs of people’s shoes and guess the age, gender, and social status of the owner.
The results showed that the students guessed 90 per cent of the participants personal characteristics correctly.
The psychologists reported, “Shoes convey a thin but useful slice of information about their wearers.
“Shoes serve a practical purpose, and also serve as nonverbal cues with symbolic messages. People tend to pay attention to the shoes they and others wear.
“Shoes have great variety of styles, brands, looks, and functions. Because of this variety, shoes can carry individual difference information, but do they?
“We suggest that the answer is yes.”
There were attributes that the students failed to guess though. According to the psychologists, those who wear ‘boring’ shoes find it hard to form relationships, something that the students failed to guess.
The study also said that there are a small percentage of people who wear footwear that contrasts their personality to give a certain public image that they wish to conform to.
So next time you meet someone, use your shoe instinct, it’s pretty much a failsafe way to meet your perfect match!
