Why is Saturday night still Britain’s favourite night to date and what makes weekend nights more popular than week days?

Our LoveGeist Report has shown that Saturday night is the most popular for dating, probably because being tired or busy at work – the most common reasons for cancelling dates – don't apply at the weekend. Those of us with Mon-Fri jobs can sleep late on Saturday morning, forget work for a couple of days, and concentrate on having fun. Previous LoveGeist reports have shown that Brits like to take their time to get ready for a date (with men almost taking as long as women these days!) so both sexes also appreciate having time to focus on their appearance. Plus, Saturday nights have lively bars and restaurants, towns are full of people out for the evening - there's a great atmosphere which can rub off on your date.

Why are big shows like The X Factor and Strictly Come Dancing not getting in the way of dating?

When you're single or dating, it's fun to go out and meet new people or get to know a new partner on a Saturday night.  It’s now really easy to record “big” Saturday night shows or watch them on catch up TV so they can be saved for a lazy Sunday or mid-week catch up instead.

How important are lie- ins to a couple’s relationship?

Knowing you can have a lie-in the following morning helps couples be a little more spontaneous. Unlike a week-night where you know you have to be up and ready for work in the morning, a Friday or Saturday night date can start and go on later. If someone suggests a club at midnight, you have the freedom to say, "great!" rather than, "I'd better not..." And nothing beats a lazy morning in with your partner; that's one of the things singles miss most.

Why are Mondays the worst time to go on a date?

Work, stress, back to the routine... Monday is a day where we plan the rest of the week. You hit the gym to burn off a big weekend, or you stay in to save money, or you catch up on laundry or sleep. Plus, knowing you have work in the morning means you're more likely to meet straight from work, which makes preparation more stressful! Getting ready in the office loos is never very glamorous!

What are match.com nights?

If you're someone who likes going out on weeknights, try a match.com  night. We arrange these relaxed evenings in bars all over the UK, on Monday-Thursday evenings, so that singles can meet one another over drinks. Members and their friends can come along and meet a lot of new, people. It's completely free of charge... and the best thing is, everyone's unattached! There is no pressure, no forced interaction (unlike speed dating) - it's just like a normal night out in a bar. For more information, see the match.com website.

How can finances affect a date?

You may find yourself running low on finances towards the end of the month, but dating doesn’t need to be expensive. Visit our advice portal (match.com/advice) for ideas on how to dazzle your date without breaking the bank. There are loads of suggestions for inexpensive dates that are fun, romantic and memorable. Try one this Saturday night!
