Relationships on Female First

We love and trust our dogs so much that 40 per cent of owners are more likely to share their deepest secrets with their four-legged friends, and two in three call their furry friend their best friend.

The relationship between man and dog has always had deep-lying emotional connections and the research showed that four in five people feel happier after talking to their dog.

No surprises then why we're so keen to have a natter with them!

As much as we all love our partners, we have come up with ten reasons why people may sometimes prefer their dog's company…

  1. Dogs make the best therapists
  2. They always remain impartial and never make judgements
  3. No back-chat, ever
  4. They're proven to cheer you up when you're feeling down
  5. They love you no matter what
  6. They're always happy to see you
  7. You're always on the same page (*cough, husband*)
  8. They'll remain loyal, regardless of what you say
  9. They allow you come to your own conclusion
  10. They hang on your every word

Speaking as Crufts, the largest dog show in the world, kicked off at the NEC in Birmingham, tails.com lead nutritionist Dr Samantha Ware said:

"We are a nation of dog lovers and clearly value the individuality, companionship and friendship that our own dogs provide. This week there are over 22,000 dogs competing at Crufts, examples of every Kennel Club recognised breed in the peak of health and condition all hoping to take home the 'Best in Show' award for their owner. Whether they're a prize winner or not, at tails.com we recognise that every dog is different and provide each dog with their own freshly blended tailor-made food that is as individual as they are."

Almost every dog owner surveyed said that their dog was not just a pet, but a part of the family.
