They go through phases- They won't touch their novel for months and then get some inspiration and you won't see them for days if not weeks while they churn it all out.
They are focused when an idea strikes
They'll talk about their fame and fortune- They will begin sentences with 'when I'm a rich and famous author…' They dream big and make you promises they might not be able to keep.
They tell everyone they meet they are writing a novel- It's a conversation piece for sure and they know it because people approve of this hobby and always want to know more.
They will never let you read it- They tell you can do so when it's finished so you know nothing about the plot or the characters if people ask and it makes you look disinterested in your partner's pursuits. They know the truth and that's all that matters.
They like to have all the apparatus- Expensive laptop- check, more pens and notebooks that they know what to do with- check- a place where they can go to write- all of the above. Birthdays and anniversaries are easy because not matter how much of this stuff they own they still want more.
They will rarely go in their special writing place- It's all kitted out but they don't go in there as often as they perhaps should- but you don't tell them this or they will get mad at you for pointing out their lack of commitment to their book.
They like alone time- If they can spend hours in their own company writing, this will extend to other areas of their life too. Make sure you give them the space they need or they'll write you out of their novel or kill you off in it- but either way it's a writer's way of dumping you.
They get insecure- When they are full of ideas they are on top of the world but when the well goes dry- they will feel like a failure in all areas of their life. Make sure you're equipped with lots of positive and uplifting things to say to them.
They wear their heart on their sleeve- Their most private emotions are exposed in their writing which they plan to show to the world one day- so chances are they will be very open and honest about their feelings because they have to let them out.
They're always thinking- About their next novel idea or for something to do with their current project, so if they drift off for a while- it's all for a good cause not because they find you boring.
