You’d think that enjoying a romantic break with your partner would be something couples would be looking forward to for the whole year.

Apparently not, as 60 per cent of women have jetted off with their friends and left their loved one at home to hold down the fort.

The main reason for leaving their partner in favour of their girlfriends was down to getting away from family life.

Other reasons included couples not being able to get the same time off work as well as preferring different types of holidays.

One in five women also admitted to taking the child away without their partner and 10 per cent said they have been away on their own to get away from all the stresses of everyday life.

Carmelina Tangi, spokesman for Hilton HHonors, which commissioned the research to mark of the launch of The Great Getaway discounts, said, “Variety is the spice of life and trying new experiences, exploring cultures or indulging a hobby are all ways to unwind on holiday.

“Different trips suit different purposes, so whether you’re looking for the luxury escape of a lifetime, family fun on a beach break, fine dining, culture, spas or shopping, it makes sense to share these experiences with different people in our lives.”

It’s not just the women who are ditching their partners for their friends, men are doing it too.

Two thirds of men admitted to leaving their partner at home whilst they jetted off on holiday with the lads.

Their main reason for wanting to get away was so that they could experience a different type of holiday, the most popular being a sporting holiday.

For women, city breaks were the most common partner-free holidays, followed by shopping or spa break holidays.

Spain, France and Italy were the top three partner-free holiday destinations and London, Barcelona and Amsterdam were the top three cities.

Unfortunately, it isn’t all plain sailing as a third of men admitted to missing their wedding anniversary by jetting off with their mates on holiday.
