Queen Elizabeth

Britain's Queen Elizabeth visited Royal Holloway, University Of London today (13.03.14).

The 87-year-old monarch was joined by Prince Phillip at the ceremony which took place at 10.30am as the university was awarded the Diamond Jubilee Professorship of Music in recognition of the music department's excellent quality of research and teaching.

The award - which is also recognised as the regius professorships - is rarely presented, but in October 2012 it was announced the queen would create up to six new Regius Professorships.

Professor Julian Johnson has become the first Regius Professor of Music after heading the department between 2010 - 13.

The monarch last visited the university in 1986 when she opened the new Earth Sciences Building.

The royal visit comes just as Elizabeth - who has Prince Charles, 65, Princess Anne, 63, Prince Andrew, 54, and Prince Edward, 50 with the Duke of Edinburgh - has been voted Royal mother of the year, according to a poll held by Disney.

She comes in joint place with Duchess Catherine - who has seven-month-old George with husband Prince William.
