You snooze, you lose, says new research

According to new research from energy company E.ON, over five million people are dozing through their alarm and almost missing their holiday flights and departures as a result.

In a series of ‘Pre-Holi-Daze’ revelations, almost one in 10 respondents have left a loved-one at home in their rush to catch a flight and a quarter of people forget to turn their lights off at home and overlook unplugging household gadgets before setting off.

The findings reveal that in the rush to leave the house people are leaving important documents such as passports and visas behind (17 per cent) and forgetting to properly secure their homes (13 per cent).

Everybody loves a holiday but the lead up can be chaotic making it easy to forget those pre-holiday checks."

Demonstrating a lack of awareness around energy savings, over three-quarters (79 per cent) of people forget to adjust their heating settings, meaning they are missing out on energy and cash savings.

E.ON is advising holidaymakers to ensure that switching off electrical appliances and turning down the heating is high on their pre-holiday checklists to avoid running up unnecessary costs whilst away.

Beverley Maguire, Energy Fitness Expert at E.ON, said: “Everybody loves a holiday but the lead up can be chaotic making it easy to forget those pre-holiday checks. Try and write a checklist in advance to ensure everything is covered off and you won’t experience the anxious feeling that comes with the panic that you’ve forgotten to do something at home.

“As well as securing your home and turning off all the lights, it’s important not to forget the many items we have plugged in at home that are simply draining energy and cash away. We’d urge everyone to ‘switch off before they jet off’ so they can make vital energy savings,” she added.

To keep your home ticking over and save energy and cash while on holiday follow E.ON’s Top Energy Fit Summer Switch-Off Tips:

1. Unplug all electrical appliances at the wall –TVs, microwaves, radios and cookers all use energy in standby mode.

2. Don’t defrost your fridge or freezer – it costs more to restart them than keep them running at their normal pace.

3. Set your fridge to 5°C and freezers to -17°C – this is the optimum temperature recommended to minimize energy wastage.

4. Turn off your heating completely. Leaving the heating on a low setting all the time isn’t cheaper than turning it on when you need it.

5. Check your water system to ensure you haven’t left your hot water on a longer winter setting.
