The 42-year-old actor says he is happy to oblige viewers of the Apple TV + comedy who want him to step into his part as the coach of fictional Premier League side Richmond AFC, but sometimes wants to know if the person on the receiving end of his jokey abuse “deserves it".

He told the Daily Star newspaper about being asked to curse at fans: “I had that in a supermarket the other day. ‘Can you call my auntie and tell her to f*** off?’

“I was like: ‘I’m going to need more info on your auntie. I don’t know what she’s done - I don’t know if she deserves this.

“‘I’m going to need a whole bio on this woman before I complete this task.’”

Brett recently revealed he finds it “heartbreaking” footballer-turned-coach Roy and his on-sceen girlfriend Keeley Jones - played by Juno Dawson - had split up.

He told TV Insider: “I don’t think I can answer that. And likewise, when it comes to hope for the fan-favourite couple, all I can say is I love Roy and Keeley, and it’s heartbreaking that they’ve broken up.

“Beyond that…. you’ll have to wait and see.”

The Emmy-winner labelled his ever-evolving relationship with cocky footballer Jamie Tartt – brought to life by Phil Dunster on ‘Ted Lasso’ – is the “other great love story” in the show, which also stars Jason Sudeikis and Hannah Waddingham.

Brett said: “Well, I think it’s the other great love story in ‘Ted Lasso’. I think Roy’s realized, you know, for all Roy’s flaws and self-loathing, he does see in Jamie a version of himself.”
