The 39-year-old actress - who is set to play university lecturer Leah Dale in the upcoming four part ITV drama - has admitted while she is very proud of the role she isn't bothering herself with worrying about the ratings once it hits the small screen.

She's quoted by The Sun newspaper's TV Bizarre collum as saying: "You can never predict the popularity of a show and I actually feel like it's none of my business how well it does."

The star - who played Becky McDonald on 'Coronation Street' for six years until 2012 - also shrugged off the idea that her new role could turn her into a sex symbol.

She added: "We're not interested for us as actors about how this is going to come out. We're not thinking: 'Yeah, I'm going to look really sexy in this.' "

The upcoming thriller will see Katherine's character lock horns with a student - Rose, played by Molly Windsor - she thinks is guilty of plagiarism, which the other women denies.

The situation quickly deteriorates to the point that a murder is committed, and while Kelly's character is totally against cheating, she wasn't quite as averse to the idea in real life.

She explained to the Mirror: "When I was at school they were starting to move away from exam-based results and into course work. My course work was more of a collaborative effort."

'Cheat' is set to be shown across one week from March 11.
