Dr Christian Jessen thinks it would be "ridiculous" having same-sex couples on 'Strictly Come Dancing'.

The 'Embarrassing Bodies' presenter - who is himself openly gay - has slammed the prospect of same-sex pairings on the prime time show by saying men and women "look better" dancing together.

He told BANG Showbiz: "I think dancing traditionally is a man leading a woman.

"I think it'll look faintly ridiculous personally. But I don't think that's any sort of statement of, 'We don't approve of this, that or the other' at all. I just think it'll look silly quite frankly, and I think a man and a woman look better dancing together."

The 38-year-old medical professional instead criticised people campaigning for the move, saying they are being "too political".

He continued: "I think it becomes a little bit too political sometimes and I think if you wave that flag a little bit too hard you're in danger of knocking people over whilst you do so. I don't care in the slightest about that, I'm quite happy to see a gay man dancing with a woman. I mean, come on, it's like saying as a gay man you're not allowed to have female friends. There are limits I think to how far we take it."

However, Christian - who confessed he is a huge fan of the BBC show - revealed he won't be appearing on the show anytime soon because his dancing skills are so poor.

Speaking at the new cast launch of 'The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time', he added: "As a gay man I'm an appalling dancer, which I know just doesn't fit with the stereotype. But I'm really, really ... I'm clunky and gangly and awful.

"I love 'Strictly'. Secretly if I could dance I'd love to do it but I'm quite competitive so I don't want to be the John Sergeant of 'Strictly' which I fear I might be."

'The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time' continues at Gielgud Theatre in London. For further information on the show visit http://www.curiousonstage.com/
